USD 460 Families,

Recently, the Kansas State Board of Education approved new cut scores for the Kansas Assessment Program (KAP) Summative State Assessments. These assessments, which Kansas students take each spring, measure progress in Math and English Language Arts (ELA) in grades 3–8 and 10, and Science in grades 5, 7, and 11. The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) has now released the spring 2025 results, and we want to share information about when these results will be available for our families.

Kansas students have taken state assessments for many years. About five years ago, the state began work to refresh these assessments. That process included updating test questions to better align with Kansas academic standards in math, reading, and science. The updated assessments were given for the first time in spring 2025.

Because the assessments changed, the State Board also reviewed and adjusted how student performance levels are defined. This work sets a new baseline for results, giving schools and families a more accurate picture of what students know and are able to do. For USD 460, this baseline will guide how we evaluate current performance and how we focus our improvement efforts moving forward.

Over the next several weeks, USD 460 will review and discuss these results with our Board of Education, District Leadership Teams, and District Site Council. Together, we will look at what the data shows about our students’ learning, how these results connect to other measures we use, and how we can continue strengthening instruction across our schools.

Key upcoming dates include:

September 22 – Board of Education retreat

October 1 – District Leadership Team (teachers and administrators from all schools)

October 14 – District Site Council

Following these discussions, we plan to open the Parent Portal by mid-October so families can view their child’s individual spring 2025 KAP results. At the same time, we will share a districtwide overview of student performance and explain how these results fit into our broader Balanced Assessment System—our commitment to using multiple data points to support our teachers by informing the instruction we provide to our students each day.

As always, we welcome your questions and feedback. Thank you for your continued support and for helping us get off to a strong start to the 2025–26 school year. Our office number is 620-327-4931, and my email is ben.proctor@usd460.org.
